How to Tell a Bee, Wasp, and Hornet Apart

Despite their ability to sting you, these stinging insects are very different.

Unfortunately, flying stinging insects seem to be having a moment at present (murder hornets, anyone?). It is also prime time for these insects to pursue flowers and backyard barbecues, making the chances of encountering a bee, wasp, or hornet very high during the warmer weather.

Even though they are all capable of stinging you, bees, wasps, and hornets are pretty different. In a perfect world, you would go through life never having to encounter one. In reality, you will most likely cross paths with one or all of these pests on Long Island.

Here is how to tell bees, wasps, and hornets apart—from their appearance to their habitat to their stinging power—so you know what you are dealing with if you happen to come across one.

Bees

You probably know a bee when you see one, but it can be challenging to differentiate between it and a wasp or hornet.

What are the most common bee species on Long Island?

The most common types of bees you are likely to come across on Long Island are honey bees, carpenter bees, and bumblebees. Long Island homeowners may encounter solitary ground-nesting bees during the spring.

What do bees look like?

Bumblebees and carpenter bees are burly insects that are rounder in shape and usually black and yellow in color. Honey bees are banded orange and black in color but also hairy in appearance. Honey bees are likely the most common type of bee you will encounter on long island, New York. Bees commonly range in size from a quarter of an inch to an inch in length.

Where can you find bees?

It depends on what kind of bee you are looking for. Honey bees usually construct hives in hollow trees, while bumblebees will commonly nest in abandoned rodent burrows. Carpenter bees build their nests in wood, including partially decayed trees or structural timber. Honey bees, carpenter bees, and bumblebees can all be seen on flowers foraging for nectar.

Can bees hurt you?

Most bees can sting, resulting in immediate pain and a localized reaction of mild swelling, redness, and itching at the sting site. However, for people with allergies to bee stings, even one sting can be life-threatening.

Honey bees die after they sting a person, and ground-nesting bees are not aggressive, so the chances of being stung by one are low.

Wasps

Wasps and hornets are not the same. A hornet is a type of wasp. The main difference between hornets and wasps, such as paper wasps and bald-faced hornets, is size, with hornets being more robust and larger. Additionally, hornets are social insects, whereas wasps can be social or solitary, depending on the species.

What are the most common wasp species on Long Island, New York?

Paper wasps and yellow jackets are the most common wasp species found on Long Island.

What do wasps look like?

Wasps have a narrow, pinched waist and are black or have various white, orange, or yellow markings. Unlike bees, wasps do not have a great deal of hair. Wasps range in size from a half-inch to an inch in length.

Where can you find wasps?

Wasps construct their nests in the eaves, and bushes, along fences, and inside the walls and ceilings of Long Island homes. Paper wasp nests resemble upside-down umbrellas, while yellow jackets typically build their nests in the ground. Wasps are predators, so they like meat, and they also like sweets. Yellowjackets are often the uninvited guest at barbecues foraging for meat and sugary drinks, such as soda.

Can wasps hurt you?

Yes, and when threatened, a wasp can sting you multiple times.

People are usually stung by wasps when they get too close to a wasp nest. Like bees, if you are allergic to wasp venom, getting stung by a wasp can trigger a severe allergic reaction.

Hornets

Hornets, including bald-faced hornets and European hornets, are the largest of the stinging insects found on Long Island. Here's what you need to know about them.

What are the most common hornet species in the United States?

The European hornet, a.k.a. the brown hornet or giant hornet, is the primary type of hornet found in the U.S.

What do hornets look like?

European hornets are large and reddish-brown with yellow stripes on their abdomen. Bald-faced hornets, on the other hand, are primarily black with a white pattern on their head, giving them a bald appearance.

Where can you find hornets on Long Island?

It depends on the type of hornet that you are looking for. European hornets generally construct their nests in hollow trees and barns. Bald-faced hornet's nests can be found suspended on tree branches, in a shrub, on a utility pole, or on the soffit of a Long Island residence.

Can hornets hurt you?

Yes, and they can repeatedly sting, resulting in severe pain and injury. An allergic reaction to the insect's venom could potentially be life-threatening.

Spring is Finally Here ! Welcome, Green Leaves, Tulips, and ... Raccoons ?

The new season is upon us and there’s nothing like springtime in New York. The flowers begin to bloom, the trees get their leaves back, and the air is pleasant for a stroll—the crispness of the cooler months with the sunshine’s promise of warmer weeks to come. It’s great! We’ve been waiting since October!
But, so have others… like raccoon families, particularly mamas. They are ready for the new spring arrivals, and the last item on the “to-do” list is to make a nest. And guess what? Your attic looks pretty appealing.
There are a few reasons this becomes a problem in spring and there are a number of problems, aside from the obvious, with a raccoon guest. Because this issue is particularly dire and pervasive, I will spend some time over the next month or so talking about raccoon habits—why they do what they do—and what can be done about it—why we do what we do.
Do you have any raccoon stories you’d like to share? If so, we’d love to hear about your experiences. Post a comment and let us know what happened. Maybe you’ll have just the information someone needs! What damages did you see? How did you solve the problem?
As things warm up outside, be on the lookout for more posts about raccoons here: about their habits, how to detect a problem, and what to do if you have one. And feel free to ask us questions and tell us your stories!

Fleas: More Than Just an Aggravating Pest Infestation

After a long winter, and a few more weeks to follow, most of our pets have spent a significant amount of time indoors. Many times, this means that pests may be brought into the home after your morning walk and take up residence in your home—a common one is a flea.
Fleas are external parasites, meaning they feed off the blood of humans and animals from outside the body. They like warm blood and will go after it. They can also carry diseases. While the biting and scratching acrobatics of your pet may seem a bit funny, fleas are definitely no laughing matter.
Your vet can offer a variety of ways to deter a flea infestation for your pet—from flea collars to medications and treatments, but often these diligent parasites find a way to enter and multiply. This is a problem for both your pet and for you and your family. Not only will you notice your pet biting and scratching their skin, but you may also notice small bite marks on yourself or your children. This means there is a flea infestation and you will need professional pest remediation.
Fleas can quickly take over a space—the eggs and resulting flea larvae develop in a short amount of time. You can try some home remedies, but to ensure the problem is truly solved once and for all, you will want to contact a Long Island exterminator. Once they take care of the flea infestation, make sure you incorporate preventative measures to keep them at bay.

Cockroaches: The Ugly Truth

As the old adage goes, at least for those of us in the pest control industry, “There’s never just one cockroach.” And it is true. Cockroaches have been roaming the earth for millions of years and over that time they have adapted and changed to the conditions – no one really likes to have them around and they have responded by expediting their reproduction and battening their defenses. Cockroaches are known for carrying disease and for virtually taking over places where there is a benevolent environment. They like places that have a solid food source and can offer cracks and spaces to hide. Unfortunately, this may mean your kitchen. As we said before, you should take fast, proactive steps if you see one cockroach—because there is never just one, at least not for long. There are a number of home remedies that can be attempted with a cockroach infestation but to varying degrees of success. There are bait stations that you can put out, but this may not be a good solution if you have pets or children. There are spray poisons on the market that may work to some degree, but remember that cockroaches have something of an evolutionary advantage.
A Long Island cockroach exterminator will have more potent poisons than you can get at your local store, and they are knowledgeable about how to use them in order to keep a safe home for you and your family.
Once you get the problem resolved, you may want to investigate a little further to see why your home or business was selected by this pest. If you have sitting water somewhere or keep garbage nearby, that may hold the attraction. You’ll also want to be a little more cognizant of keeping food out on countertops and not letting dirty dishes sit for any length of time. As a final measure, you may want to take a peek around to see if there are any little cracks that may have presented as the proverbial front door for the cockroaches. But, a cockroach can slither in through the tiniest of spaces, so don’t get discouraged if you can’t find any openings.
The one thing to remember is that you should take action upon the first sight of this nasty pest. To learn more, visit The American Lung Association.

Nassau County Pest Control Fights Bed Bugs with Dogs

As an experienced Nassau County exterminator, I’ve been fairly blessed in my professional endeavors over the years: first, blessed to have the opportunity to work in a family pursuit; second, I’m blessed to have fantastic tools with which to do my job.

Barney sits to indicate the presence of bed bugs.
Right now, I’m especially blessed to have Barney, my detection dog, to help me provide better service for bed bug control in New York. Barney can enter just about any home, hotel, hostel, or apartment and within moments, know whether bed bugs are present. With the utmost professionalism, he sniffs out the pest and calmly sits to indicate he’s found the offending insect’s lair.
I’m simultaneously proud and a little saddened to hold the distinct honor of having a partner with Barney’s talent. Despite their effectiveness, bed bug detection dogs are still relatively uncommon, with only about 100 pest control businesses using detection dogs to sniff out bed bugs. New York City and the nation is seeing an explosive bed bug comeback, and hopefully, that will mean a proportional explosion in the use of these amazing detection animals. Until then, Barney and I will get to as many of them as we can. If you wish to make a bed bug or other pest complaint to New York City government or would like additional information, NYC 311 is a terrific resource.

New Challenges for Bedbug Control in Nassau County, New York

We’ve all heard or used the saying, “Good night/sleep tight – don’t let the bed bugs bite.”
Oh, but they’re biting and in many cases, they’re taking a big bite out of the bottom line for hotels and other entities that entertain overnight guests. In the United States, reported cases of bed bug infestation have risen more than 70 percent in less than a decade, cropping up often in hotels, motels, dormitories, and apartments where there may be a high turnover in occupancy. Bed bug control in New York is suffering an even more serious hit, with some agencies reporting an increase in bed bug complaints of nearly tenfold in the just the last four years.
A bed bug infestation isn’t indicative of the level of cleanliness of a hotel. Even upscale hotels in the U.S. that are known for spotless facilities are finding the pests in increasing numbers, thanks to the ability of these creatures to hitch a ride in the luggage of international travelers.
If you live in New York, pest control experts in the city are generally well-versed in dealing with these bothersome insects pretty thoroughly and on short notice. I’d also suggest reporting the infestation to NYC 311, which functions as a clearinghouse for city government services and resources. The agency also keeps records and issues reports on infestations such as bed bugs, rats, and other pervasive pests.

My Best BUD Barney is a Rising Star in New York Termite Inspection

Barney the termite inspection dog and BOBO enjoy libations.

After years of experience in the family-owned Nassau County pest control business, I thought I'd learned most of the best tricks and gathered all the finest technologies necessary to stay at the top in my industry. When I met my buddy Barney, I almost felt like an amateur by comparison.
His reputation for loyalty and a strong work ethic preceded him. Even more impressive was his reputation for finding pests that other New York termite inspection experts – maybe even I – had missed. It was the kind of talent that was almost spooky, it was so uncanny. What could I expect from our first meeting?
Gregarious and demonstrative, Barney greeted me enthusiastically. He was shorter than I expected, but showed a forceful personality and held his own in the meeting. No hint of ego whatsoever, though, despite his superior talent. I have to say it was hard not to like the little guy, given his sunny disposition. OK, so he was easily distracted at first, but that's to be expected with a genius of this caliber.
Barney is a basset hound, a breed known for one of the sharpest noses in the canine world, second only to the bloodhound from which he descended. Having his talented snout on my side has been invaluable to my customers. I can't tell you how many times he has detected termites for a home buyer after they had been told by their home inspector that there was no termite activity. Within moments of entering an infested area, Barney homes right in on these destructive pests, placing his nose to the precise spot where they're nesting. Often, these are places where no evidence would be visible to the naked eye. Left untreated, these termites could have wreaked untold damage on the new owner's home.
Although termites are his specialty, Barney has also proven his worth in bedbug control in New York, helping to rat out pests from private homes, apartments, and hotels throughout the metropolitan area. Read my next blog to learn more about Barney's training through the Forensic & Scientific Investigations Canine Academy.

DQ Pest Control Wildlife Exterminator

I like big bugs and I cannot lie/All you other brothers can't deny ..."

Well, OK, that's not entirely accurate. If I'm to be brutally honest, as a New York animal control and wildlife removal professional, I've actually made the elimination of bugs and other pests my stock in trade.

My name is David Quinn, and for many years now it's been my privilege to help Long Island pest control customers with all kinds of infestations: cockroaches, ants, fleas and ticks, termites, mice, rats, bats, birds, and all manner of nuisance wildlife.
Long Island ant exterminating
I'd love to be able to say that we intelligent humans unfailingly declare swift victories over these pests, but the sad fact is sometimes it's the seemingly humble invaders that eventually get the upper hand ... er, wing, claw, or mandible, as the case may be. However, in my experience as a Brooklyn exterminator, I've picked up a thing or two about more than a few pesky critters.
I know you must have plenty to say on these topics as well. With this forum, I hope to offer up tips for dealing with vexing pest issues, dish up tricks of the trade you can put to work in your own pest control efforts and give you the opportunity to chime in as well. We'll touch on every pest control subject from the ever-resilient cockroach to the proficient gnawing of the Norway rat, as well as other topics on which I'll offer insight:
  • Dog Termite & Bedbug Detection
  • Animal Trapping
  • Dead Animal Removal & Odor Control
  • Biohazardous Material Cleanup & Decontamination
  • Attic Restoration & Raccoon Feces Removal
  • Chimney Cap Installation & Attic Vent Screening
During the months, and hopefully, years, to come, as you get to know me and my trade, I welcome the honor of getting to know you as well. This isn't "Dave's Blog" – it's your sounding board, your safe house. No traps or deterrents here! Let's share with each other the stories, ordeals, questions, and concerns that come to light and find solutions (check out the New York State Pest Management Association website as a resource) and hash-out ideas together.
